Background/History: Bodach-rocais (lit. “old man of the rooks”) is a monstrous scarecrow known to haunt the United Kingdom, specifically Scotland. Its exact origins are unknown, but mystic heroes have speculated its actually a creature from the faerie realms, come to Earth to further its own inscrutable ends. It has also been suggested that Bodach-rocais is an exile from the faerie realms, banished to Earth because he was too violent and evil for even that capricious land.

Personality/Motivation: Nigh-on to the personification of evil, Bodach-rocais revels in causing mayhem. However, he’s not chaotic about it, and often plans his attacks and escapades for maximum impact. His terror sprees usually occur wherever there are large groups of people, and typically targets sporting events, festivals, fairs, political rallies, and the like.

Quote: Bodach-rocais tends to laugh manically, but rarely says much beyond that.

Powers/Tactics: As a creature of Faerie, Bodach-rocais possesses a number of powers and abilities common to that realm. He’s nearly immune to most attacks, is hard to hurt, and can vanish at will. He also can project a searing blast of flame from the candle in his head, overwhelm a target’s psyche with intense images of horror, and can control ravens and crows and cause them to do his bidding. However, he’s only at this most powerful after dark, by day he’s physically rather weak and is far easier to combat. For this reason, he tends to stay hidden and out of sight when the sun is up, coming out to cause havoc only when the sun has gone down.

Appearance: Standing just over six feet in height, Bodach-rocais appears to be a simple farmer’s scarecrow. However, his framework seems to be of human bones, his ‘flesh’ is straw, and his clothing is nondescript rags and tatters. His head is a huge pumpkin, carved into a fearsome visage. Inside is a constantly burning candle, that tends to flareup whenever Bodach-rocais is angry or just before he unleashes a blast of flame.

Designer’s Notes: Bodach-rocais started out as the character of Pumpkin Jack, found on page 24 of Enemies: the International File. Contrary to the text, I couldn’t find any evidence that ‘Pumpkin Jack’ is actually a “demonic character from Scottish Folklore” but did discover the Scottish word for scarecrow to be bodach-rocais. I then decided to make character an evil faerie possessing a scarecrow and wrecking havoc. Thus, while many of Bodach-rocais’s powers come from the original character sheet (albeit in an edited and updated form) I also added in a lot of standard faerie powers from the HERO System Bestiary. One major change I made was to his Characteristics. In the original, he had a Physical Complication stating his DEX, CON, and SPD were halved during the day, here I actually bought his Characteristics with proper Limitations. It makes him rather weak, but then, he’s an NPC villain after all.

Bodach-rocais is best suited as a foe for super-powered magicians and the like, although he could fight a superhero team as part of a group of mystic or horror-themed villains and the like. He also makes a good foe for Fantasy Hero games.
