Background/History: Bond is a Scotsman, as was his father, though his mother was a Swiss national—neither parent was living by the time he joined the Secret Service—and he was primarily raised in England (and is currently being played in the movies by Pierce Brosnan, an Irishman). It is known that he was educated at Eton and Cambridge, where it's believed he performed admirably. He bought his first car, a Bentley, when he was fourteen, and has always loved autos; he was also an avid golfer when he was younger and could have gone professional(!), but instead joined the Royal Navy, where he soon attained the rank of Commander. From there, he was offered a position with M.I.6, the legendary (but quite real) British Secret Service, which he eagerly accepted.
Bond was given the designation 007 by M.I.6, meaning he is one of the few British agents (there are probably less than ten; SMERSH believes there are three at one point) who is licensed to kill in the line of service to Her Majesty's Government. He rose to being the Crown's top agent in little time, and was awarded the C.M.G. while still in active service, an extraordinary accomplishment.
He lives now in Chelsea, though of course he never seems to be at home. He was married once to Tracy Ange Draco, the daughter of one of his greatest adversaries, but it was not to last, as the poor bride was gunned down on her wedding day in an attempt on Bond's life.
Personality/Motivation: James Bond is an exceptionally driven and dedicated agent, and Fleming's treatment of his personality helped to define that of the classic ice-water-in-his-veins spy. Bond's loyalty to his few friends, his service, and the Crown is absolutely unshakable by normal means. (He does get briefly hypnotized into helping the enemy through the intense and prolonged use of drugs and indoctrination in the book The Man With the Golden Gun.)
He is consistently thought to be too reckless in his duties by M, his somewhat fatherly (or motherly, in the later movies) superior at M.I.6, and as a result is often being assigned to what he feels to be "soft" jobs—which typically result in even more exciting and dangerous adventures, thanks to Bond's drive and natural inquisitiveness. Often he's been placed at odds with his superiors when his loyalty to those outside the Service leads him to missions of vengence. He's "tendered his resignation" several times in the books, and at least once in the movies, in order to pursue matters of personal honor or vendetta. He is always either accepted back into the Service or has his resignation refused.
His drive and professionalism can be derailed, however. For one, Bond is unabashedly fond of the "good life". He'll go out of his way to assure that he's surrounded by the finest creature comforts that are available, and though he's aware of his persnickety nature, and with the exception of his smoking habit, he's done nothing to curb it. This shouldn't be mistaken for pretentiousness—Bond does not affect any of his preferences, and disdains those who do. (In the book Diamonds Are Forever, he mistrusts an agent because of a Windsor knot in his tie, which he feels to be an affectation. He later exposes the man as a double agent when he fails to correctly identify a claret.) It should also be noted that having a martini shaken and not stirred is considered gauche in some social circles, but Bond knows the rules well enough to know when to break them—and besides, it results in what he considers a better-tasting martini.
His other fondness is, of course, women. Though it seems that women are throwing themselves at him on a constant basis, this doesn't prevent Bond from pursuing them himself... and those who are harder-to-get will cause him to pursue in earnest. He does have his standards, but a pretty girl is sure to distract him for a vital few seconds at the very least, just by her beauty.
Quotes: "My name is Bond... James Bond."
"Vodka martini. Shaken, not stirred."
"But, Doctor No, you are still a man who sleeps and eats and defecates like the rest of us. So no more conjuring tricks, please. I am not impressed by them." (the book Doctor No)
"Very novel, Q. You must remember to place this in the catalogue in time for Christmas." (the movie Moonraker)
"Right. Now jot this down on the back of your cheque book and see you get it right. Book me a compartment on the Silver Meteor to New York tonight. Have a bottle of vintage champagne on ice and plenty of caviar sandwiches. The best caviar. Oh... one last thing. I shall be taking a hostage for the ride to New York. Miss Masterton. See that she's at the train. Oh, and make that compartment a drawing-room. That's all." (Bond blackmailing Auric Goldfinger, in the book Goldfinger)
Powers/Tactics: Bond is not an overpowering presence; he is, however, an extremely dangerous customer due to his acumen and resourcefulness. There seems to be little he doesn't know or can't do; the Chief of Staff notes with some snippiness when quizzing Bond about diamonds (the movie Diamonds Are Forever, naturally) that it was "a pleasure to find a subject on which you are not an expert, 007." SMERSH's dossier on Bond (the book From Russia With Love) notes him as an expert marksman with a pistol, a knife-thrower, an excellent boxer with knowledge of judo holds (he later learns ninjitsu under Tiger Tanaka, in the movie You Only Live Twice), proficient in French and German (among other languages), and an all-around athlete. As such, I've set his stats accordingly and given 007 an assortment of martial maneuvers which were the most useful, most often mentioned in the books, and most commonly seen in the movies.
He's also demonstrated an ability to drive or pilot just about anything, and has frequently been called upon to defend himself while doing so. His Combat Driving and Piloting should extend to anything with which he has a TF.
Bond's way with women is truly amazing, almost to the point of using Mind Control to simulate it. It's likely that no character in fiction gets luckier than James Bond. With levels, Bond has a Seduction roll of 17- (he did miss once in the books, with Gala Brand in Moonraker) and likes to use it (see his Personality/Motivation).
Bond is also a gourmet with incredible smell and taste. He can identify types of gases and liquids with only the most minute, non-affecting sniff or taste, unless they are completely odorless and tasteless, and can rattle off the exact ingredients and temperature to within half a degree of anything he drinks. He has a remarkable knowledge of fine clothes, gourmet foods, drink, tobacco, and other items of haute couture, and is never at a loss for what to do in formal company.
His Luck and defensive PRE speak for themselves, and his extra Swimming simulates his ability to get away from exploding underwater bases with ease.
Appearance: James Bond is in his mid-thirties, with blue eyes, a "cruel" mouth, and a slim build, standing 183 cm (an even 6'0") and weighing 76 kg (about 167 lbs.) His short black hair is often combed in such a way that a forelock hangs carelessly over his eyebrow. He has a slight scar on his cheek and another on his shoulder, and signs of plastic surgery on the back of his right hand, all from undisclosed accidents in the field (one of which had him hospitalized before the movie Doctor No). He is usually dressed impeccably, owing to style and comfort, regardless of the situation.
Designer's Notes: Created by British intelligence expert Ian Fleming, James Bond has had adventures spanning about forty years, written by three different principle authors, and has been portrayed by five different actors in nineteen films over roughly the same period. (Both David Niven's parody in Casino Royale and Barry Nelson's portrayal in the earlier and extremely rare American TV version of the same story are generally not counted, though Niven was the first to identify himself as "Bond...James Bond.") As such, it's inevitable that some details of his character are contradictory or difficult to pin down. Still, there is a great deal of consistency in Bond over the years, and as such, I chose to concentrate on that, or at least the indisputable details, rather than patterning this writeup on any particular book, movie, or time period.
