Description: Steve Austin was born in Ojai, California in 1940, and joined the Air Force at an early age. An accomplished pilot, Steve was selected to become an astronaut and was part of two moon missions in 1970 and 1971. Then he went back to working for the Air Force in 1972, where he tested top-secret jets. A horrifying crash landing later that year crippled him, destroying most of both legs and his left side. An old friend, Dr. Rudy Wells, who had worked with Steve at NASA, approacehed him as he was recovering in his hospital bed and offered him a remarkable opportunity; if he agreed to serve as a “guinea pig” for Wells’ new bionics program, the government would provide him with new, artificial limbs and organs that would not only resotre his body’s functionality, but enhance it to superhuman standards. Steve agreed, and underwent months of complicated surgery. His legs and left arm were replaced with bionic limbs, giving him superhuman strength and running speed. His entire skeleton was reinforced with steel to allow him to function, and the limbs were covered with synthetic skin so realistic that no one could tell he’d ever been injured. His left eye was rebuilt entirely, giving him incredible distance vision. In exchange, Austin became the first bionic field operative for the secretive Office of Scientific Intelligence, under the command of Oscar Goldman, who would periodically send him on missions vital to national defense.
In his personal life, Steve lives pretty much as a loner, enjoying manly hobbies like fishing and camping. He was married once, back in the Sixties, but is divorced and has one son (with whom he currently has no contact, though he keeps track of him surreptitiously.) He had a relationship throughout the mid-Seventies with fellow bionic agent Jaime Sommers, a former tennis pro injured in a skydiving accident. The two broke up fairly acrimoniously in 1980, though he still cares for her deeply.
