Ecology: Lion-dragons are normally found in the dryer regions of the world, such as open plains, grasslands, scrub, and the edges of arid deserts and the like. They will also lair in broken badlands, using their powerful wings to fly to more hospitable areas to hunt. They will eat most any animal smaller than themselves, and are known to prey upon antelope, cattle, small elephants, horses, and even other predatory species, such as lions, hyenas, and even crocodiles. They lair in small family groups, usually a mated pair, and tend to hunt together, with one lion-dragon driving a desired prey item into the teeth and claws of another.
Personality/Motivation: Typical animal motivations. Lion-dragons are very intelligent animals, and are not easily fooled by the sorts of ruses that work on lesser predators. They are known to pick their targets with care, and it isn't unheard of for a lion-dragon to strike at a specific prey item to the exclusion of all others, simply because the target animal (or person!) has something the lion-dragon wants.
Powers/Tactics: Lion-dragons use their wings to great advantage when hunting, normally by dropping down from the sky onto a desired prey item. If attacking a larger prey animal, the lion-dragon will often alight in front of it, then unleash a deafening bellow, stampeding the prey into the direction of another lion-dragon lying in ambush. Lion-dragons will usually perform a Grab with their jaws, then apply a full-strength Bite to hopefully crush their victim's neck/throat and bring about almost instant death. Larger targets might get a paw swipe of two, while anyone coming up on the lion-dragon's flanks will need to content with the animal's long tail—which is covered in sharp-edged scales.
Appearance: Lion-dragons have heavy, leonine bodies, complete with thick manes about the head and neck. The rest of the body is covered in thick scales, while those on the tail project out into sharp points. Two broad, powerful bat-like wings project from the shoulders. Lion-dragons are normally the color of weathered brass, although older ones are darker, more bronze colored, while young lion-dragons are a more brilliant gold.
Designer's Notes: Derived from a Reaper miniature, the lion-dragon is based on the old AD&D creature known as a Dragonne—the cross between a Brass Dragon and a lion. Using the HERO System Bestiary, I basically spliced together material from the dragon character sheet and the one for a lion to create the lion-dragon. As with the Vulture-Lion, you might want to give the Lion-Dragon Tactics, or Teamwork (or both), as well such templates as "Smart/Cunning" or "Ferocious."
