Ecology: Vulture-Lions are found in arid locations, such as deserts or dry scrubland. They will eat both fresh meat and carrion and prey on just about anything smaller then themselves, with a diet that includes coyotes, hares, mule deer, snakes, wolves, and so on. Vulture-Lions live in small family groups called prides, and are usually ruled by either a single male, or more rarely, two related males (normally brothers). Unlike regular lions, the males hunt just as much as the females do, and often deliver the killing strike after the females drive prey items to him.
Personality/Motivation: Typical animal motivations. Due to their resource-poor environment, Vulture-Lions tend to be strongly territorial and will seek to drive off any competition.
Powers/Tactics: Normally ambush predators, Vulture-Lions will give chase if needed, but don't care to run very far, breaking off a chase in order to conserve energy. When they do catch their prey, the killing blow is often a bite to the neck area with the beak, followed by raking slashes from the front and/or rear claws.
Appearance: A Vulture-Lion has the body of a lion with the head of a vulture. Both males and females have feathery manes and can reach lengths of 10 to 12 feet (making them about the size of a tiger).
Designer's Notes: I first encountered Vulture-Lions in the works of Michael Moorcock's Elric novels. There, they are creatures of Chaos and seem to be of immense size (The Vulture-Lion character sheets that appeared in the early editions of Deities and Demigods made them 15 HD creatures!) In this case, I based the character sheet off of a picture I found on somethingawful.com. I took the Tiger character sheet from the HERO System Bestiary and added in portions of the Griffin character sheet to make a Vulture-Lion.
Although I mention Vulture-Lions working as a team, I didn't give them Teamwork or Tactics. You might want to give them such skills. Also, the entry for the Vulture-Lion on my Pictures That Could Be Superheroes page alludes to them being magical creations. If that is the case you could consider adding such Templates as "Smart/Cunning" or "Ferocious."
