GENERAL MOTORS BGP MARK 1

Inventive war machines were not only the domain of the Germans and Russians. Not to be outdone, the American fielded their own Bipedal Gun Platform (a.k.a. the General Motors BGP Mark 1), better known among most GIs as "Pistol-Packing Pete." Its primary purpose was to as as an open field infantry support weapon—it was too tall for most cities and towns, and insufficiently armored to go up against German armor. A short-barreled 75mm cannon was mounted in each "arm" along with a coaxial .50 HMG. Here a BPG Mark 1 is seen patrolling the beach at the Normandy landing.
