This section attempts to list and describe all the spells and spell-like effects seen in the pages of the Silent Möbius manga. Most powers demonstrated by Lucifer Folk are not listed, as these seem to be 'innate' powers as opposed to actual castable spells. Each spell will have the following items of information:
Page Number: The page number the spell appears on. This number will be the page number of the Japanese volume (or Side). If there is a Viz-translated trade paperback that also shows the spell, then that page number will be given in parentheses.
Who: The person casting the spell.
Spell Name: The name of the spell as given in Silent Möbius. If none is given, the name might be that of the spells most obvious feature (for example, if the spell is clearly a barrier, then the spell name will be "Barrier Spell"). If there is no given name and the spell's purpose is unknown, then the name will be listed as "Unknown".
Incantations: Incantations given while casting the spell. In general, these will be taken from various sources, not just the Viz-translated version.
Description: What the spell is seen to do in the pages of the manga. Naturally, some of this will be guess work. In general, I will describe exactly what is shown.
Game Effects: An attempt to define the spell and it effects using the HERO System. Some spells will get actually write ups, others will only be guessed at and given suggestions. Due to the nature of the manga, very few spells will be fully written up. Any spells that are written up will usually use a base of 60 active points.

Who: Gigelf Liqueur
Spell Name: Unknown (Closing the gate to Nemesis)
Incantations: Heaven's guardian Heaven's planet spirit!! Now, this once... lend
me your power!! Grand Cross, close the gate to Nemesis with your
power!! By the mercy and divine protection of the gods, close it!!
Sol's Helios
Moon's Serene!!
Mercury's Hermes
Venus's Aphrodite
Mar's Aries
Jupiter's Zeus
Saturn's Chronos
Uranus's Orpheus
Neptune's Neptunus
Pluto's Plutos
Lucifer's Hades
Tooru's Turu
And now my own planet Terra's guardian spirit Gaia!!
Close the gate to Nemesis!! In Gigelf Liqueur's name, heaven,
become a hoisting chain and close this gate in the sky!!
Description: Gigelf chants, calling upon various celestial bodies.(including
two that I have no clue as to their identity), casting a spell very
much in the hermetic tradition. At the end he calls upon the gateway
to close, which it does. We don't seem much in the way of visible
effects, although on Page 5 there is a lot of streaming cloud effects
as the spell starts.
Game Effects: The question here is "what is Gigelf casting?". The answer is
simple, he is casting a spell to force the gateway to Nemesis closed.
Now, in Hero terms, we need to figure out what the gateway is, and
how to get rid of it. Mystic Masters discusses how to build a
gate such as this one. Briefly put, a gate is built like this: Buy
Extra-dimensional Movement with the advantages of "Continuous" (+1),
"Usable by Others" (+1/4), "Open Both Ways" (-1/2), and "Stays Open
Until Creator's Next Phase" (-1/2). This means that the portal is
open both from the creator's side and from the far side of the gate
(thus, things you don't want around can wander in) and the gate
remains open for at least one full phase (including the segments in
between) once it is created. This power can also be bought with the
AoE: Radius advantage to allow large objects to pass through quickly.
Now that we have determined how to build the gate to Nemesis in the
first place, closing the gate is quite simple. You cast a Dispel big
enough to overcome the Active Points in the original power.
Gigelf's Dispel certain has such limitations as Concentrate (1/2 DCV), Extra Time (at least a Full Phase, more like a Full Turn) and Incantations.

Who: Ganossa Maximilian
Spell Name: Unknown
Incantations: None
Description: Ganossa asks Gigelf "Would you be so kind as to watch these
surprisingly bright and beautiful things?". At that point a
747 explodes, then a building blows apart and then we see a
full page spread of a massive explosion/energy surge at Narita
Airport. When it's all over, the airport is a smoking ruin.
Game Effects: Ranged Killing Attack. Ganossa unleashes an pretty serious RKA
(at least 3d6, more like 4d6), with such advantages as Penetrating
and Area of Effect: Radius.. Considering the size of the explosion
on page 21, it seems likely that the Megascale advantage was used as
well; most likely at the +1/4 level.
Note that when all the 'fireworks' are over, we see Gigelf, Ganossa, Flecks and Shiobara Ichirou standing on an untouched circle of floor. Either someone erected a barrier, or (more likely) Ganossa's spell has the Advantage of "Hole in the Middle".
Page Number: 24
Who: Ganossa (?)
Spell Name: Unknown (Teleport)
Incantations: None
Description: Ganossa and Shiobara Ichirou vanish in a roar of energy and a
blast of wind and smoke.
Game Effects: This is a pretty typical anime Teleportation spell. The special
effects are rather common for both sorcerers and psychokinetics.
Page Number: 37
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Shiobara Ichirou transforms himself into an Entity)
Incantations: None
Description: Starting on this page, and until his death on page 198, Shiobara
Ichirou manifests a large number of powers that are derived from his
slow transformation into a form of Lucifer Folk. Many of these are
not true spells, but more of innate powers.
On this page, Ichirou leaps from one speeding car onto the roof of
a mini-van and punches his hand through the roof.
Game Effects: A car is 3 DEF, and punching through the roof would require doing
4-5 BODY to the roof. Thus, it is probable that Ichirou has about a
30 STR. Since that level of STR allows one to leap up to 6", jumping
from one car to another is not a problem.
Page Number: 38
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Shiobara Ichirou transforms himself into an Entity)
Incantations: None
Description: After punching his hand through the roof of the mini-van, Ichirou
transforms his hand. His fingers become long and snake-like, tipped
with snake (or lizard or 'dragon's') heads, while a large eye sprouts
out of his palm. Gigelf punches a pen through the eye, bursting it
and putting Ichirou's eye out.
Game Effects: In Hero terms, this power isn't all that special. It is
frightening (extra dice for your PRE attack), and can easily terrify
those who are unused to magic. The best way to simulate the multiple
tentacles is with a small (say 1 pip) Hand Killing Attack, bought as
an Area of Effect: One Hex, Selective. The eye is a different
matter. I'd call it Clairsentience, since he can see into a remote
area. It is also No Range, and requires a Focus (Ichirou's hand) and
damage to the Focus damages Ichirou directly.
Page Number: 40
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Shiobara Ichirou transforms himselfinto an Entity)
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou grows bat wings.
Game Effects: Ichirou now has the power of Flight.
The wings are Restrainable (a -1/2 limitation) and require Extra Time: Full Phase to create (and
only create).
Page Number: 41
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Shiobara Ichirou transforms himself
into an Entity)
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou extends his neck into the cabin of the mini-van.
Game Effects: Ichirou has the power of Stretching. How far is unknown, but I
doubt more than an Inch (ie. 1 hex or 6 feet). Note that by this
point, Ichirou has gained some serious Distinctive Features.
Page Number: 47
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Shield
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou creates a shield 300 meters in diameter. It is apparently
invisible and stops all physical objects.
Game Effects: This is a very large (150" diameter) Force Wall. It has Invisible
Power Effects: Sight and looks to be made of pure PD. It might stop
energy attacks as well. Ichirou states that "No one can enter this
shield. And no can leave it either." making me wonder if he can
break his own Force Wall (naturally he could drop it at anytime.
Page Number: 50
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Ichirou powers up)
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou 'powers up'. He is surrounded by a blast of wind that
emanates out from his feet.
Game Effects: None really. This type of 'power up' is seen in many anime and
manga. It could be the side effect of an Aid, or it could be a
visual clue that the character is now acting at their full potential
(ie. using their full DEX and SPD scores). This many not even be a
real 'spell'.
Page Number: 52
Who: Gigelf Liqueur
Spell Name: Summoning Grospolina
Incantations: If you can hear my voice, if my voice reaches you, answer. Answer
any voice. Open your eyes! Wake up!! Emperor of Swords Grospolina!!
Description: Grospolina hurls himself out of the mini-van and into Gilgelf's
arms. Along the way, it severs one of Ichirou's wings.
Game Effects: Grospolina's ability to move is more an aspect of the sword itself
than of anything Gigelf can do. Presumably, Gigelf can 'awaken' and
summon Grospolina at will, since before this point the sword was kept
curled up in a suitcase. It should be pointed out that Grospolina
never showed these sorts of powers when he first appeared in Side 2.
Most likely, Grospolina has some sort of flight ability that requires
his master to utter the incantation to 'summon' him, Grospolina
probably can't move of his own free will.
Page Number: 53
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Shockwave)
Incantations: None (unless you count "NuooooGUGAA!!!")
Description: Ichirou gets down on one knee and fires of a bolt of force that
fractures the pavements as it passes. When it strikes a palm tree,
the explodes, along with the ground around it.
Game Effects: This is a Energy Blast. It might have such limitations as "Extra
Time" (either Delayed Phase or Extra Segment) and Gestures. The
explosion might just be a side effect of the blast blowing through
all that dirt, or it might have the advantage of "Explosion". The
fracturing ground effect is just special effects here.
Page Number: 54
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Shockwave)
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou fires off the same spell.
Game Effects: See above.
Page Number: 56
Who: Gigelf
Spell Name: Blast of light
Incantations: None
Description: A brilliant bolt of light energy that shears right through
Ichirou's body. It blows away Ichirou's left arm, left shoulder and
his left wing.
Game Effects: This spell could either be an Energy Blast or a Ranged Killing
Attack. Due to the destruction causes to Ichirou's body, I'd opt for
an RKA. Note that Gigelf tells Grospolina to assume 'blade form'
prior to casting this spell. It seems pretty certain that both
Gigelf and Katsumi were able to cast more powerful spells when using
Grospolina as a focus for their magics. Note that Gigelf says "That
was the sun's planet spirit guiding that blast of light. It should
be the most effective on you... How was it?". The first part of
that quote once again shows the hermetic influence on magic in Silent
Mobius. The second part may indicate that Lucifer Folk and their
kind are more susceptible to light based attacks than any others.
This may be why blaster pistols work so well.
Page Number: 58
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou sinks straight down into the ground, which ripples like
water around his feet.
Game Effects: This spell could be several things, such as Desolidification,
Extra-Dimensional Movement or Teleport. Odds are it's a Teleport
spell, and Ichirou's slow sinking into the ground is the special
effect for his Extra Phase in order to get his full Non-Combat
multiple.
Page Number: 61
Who: Razan Yamigumo
Spell Name: The Sword of the White Tiger
Incantations: None
Description: The Sword of the White Tiger is a very long, nodachi-sized
Nakamura katana. It is straight, with a thin blade and no tsuba
(sword guard). In fact, it greatly resembles a giant-sized version
of the cane swords used by Zato-ino in Usagi Yojimbo and
Zato-ichi in his samurai films. The sword's power appears being able
to cut virtually anything, even cutting into Grospolina in this
scene. On page 72, Razan uses the Sword of the White Tiger to chop a
tree trunk in half.
Game Effects: The Sword of the White Tiger should be written up as a large Hand
Killing Attack (2d6 or better) with the "Penetrating" advantage. The
sword should also get at least an Inch of Stretching, just like a
nodachi. Note: Kia Asamiya draws the sword to appear to be anywhere
from 5' to perhaps 8' long!
Page Number: 93
Who: Teres Bahji
Spell Name: Flight (It's not named, but it is an obvious
spell)
Incantations: None
Description: Teres Bahji stands on top of a street light
Game Effects: This is a simple application of flight. In fact, this sort of
stunt (standing on top of inaccessible locations) is a common staple
of anime and manga. Magicians and psychokinetics are
always perching on top of trees, light poles,
telephone poles ad radio antenna.
Page Number: 107
Who: Teres Bahji
Spell Name: Unknown
Incantations: None
Description: Teres hunches over and a brilliant white blast of light/heat
energy explodes outwards from where she is standing. This blast
burns up/dissolves a number of nearby Entities and leaves behind some
blackened debris and drifting smoke.
Game Effects: This is really just a small-scale version of Ganossa's
'fireworks'. It's a Ranged Killing Attack with either the
"Explosion" or "AoE: Radius" advantage and "Personal Immunity".
Page Number: 145
Who: Teres Bahji
Spell Name: Teleport
Incantations: None
Description: Teres starts out standing on top of a building, and in the space
of a panel ends up standing behind Gigelf.
Game Effects: Teleport. Possibly with "Invisible Power Effects vs Sound".
Page Number: 148
Who: Teres Bahji
Spell Name: Teleport
Incantations: None
Description: Teres starts out standing between several members of the
Magician's Guild, and than a panel later is standing on top of a
nearby building. Two panels after that, she vanishes completely.
Game Effects: This is the same spell as seen on Page 148.
Page Number: 154-155
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown (Shiobara Ichirou transforms himself
into an Entity)
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou has bat wings.
Game Effects: Ichirou has the power of Flight. The wings are Restrainable (a
-1/2 limitation) and require Extra Time: Full Phase to create (and
only create). It should be noted that Gigelf makes it sound like
Ichirou can't return to normal anymore and is stuck with his
current form. It should also be pointed out that Ichirou is once
again whole, and has no trace of the damage he sustained in his
earlier battle with Gigelf.
Page Number: 156
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Unknown
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou blows all the windows in along the hallway and fills the
air with flying glass.
Game Effects: Variable. This could be an AoE Ranged Killing Attack, although
the fragments of glass might only do 1 pip of damage each. It might
be a side effect of some other spell, or it might be something very
simple, like a Telekinetic punch to shatter the glass and scare
Gigelf and Fuyuka
Page Number: 162
Who: Kramer
Spell Name: Unknown
Incantations: None
Description: After Ichirou drops Gigelf from a great height, Kramer 'catches'
him. More accurately, Kramer slows Gigelf's fall, allowing him to
land safely on his feet.
Game Effects: This is mostly likely Kramer using Telekinesis to catch and slow
Gigelf's dropping body.
Page Number: 163 (and onwards)
Who: Genvara
Spell Name: Jesso, the Emperor of Blades
Incantations: None
Description: Genvara is seen floating in the air, holding onto a bamboo broom.
He states to Ichirou that it's all he needs to fly. Two pages alter,
Genvara sheds the broom disguise, revealing Jesso underneath.
Game Effects: This is Flight bought through a focus. It is also the least
of Jesso's powers.
Page Number: 168
Who: Genvara
Spell Name: Jesso, the Emperor of Blades
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou and Genvara rush each other, and Ichirou gets his wing
slashed by Genvara's spear.
Game Effects: This a Hand Killing Attack bought through a focus.
Page Number: 173-174
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Energy blast
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou opens his mouth real wide and unleashes a massive
energy blast. This blast vaporizes Genvara (but see below)
and blows a building in half.
Game Effects: At the scale being presented here, this could be either an Energy
Blast or a Ranged Killing Attack. Ichirou has fired off what looks
to be a good 20d6 Energy Blast, which should be enough to destroy a
building. It is likely that a spell of this magnitude would require
at least Full Phase to prepare.
Page Number: 173-177
Who: Genvara
Spell Name: Illusion
Incantations: None
Description: While fighting with Ichirou, Genvara creates an illusionary double
(which is what Ichirou blows up).
Game Effects: This is Images, bought to affect both sight and sound.
Considering how well everyone fell for it, I'd guess that it is at
least a -10 to other's PER Rolls.
Page Number: 177-178
Who: Shutoro Zekku
Spell Name: Ice Bolt
Incantations: None
Description: Shutoro fires off a could of ice darts that shatter several
windows, forcing Ichirou to dodge them
Game Effects: Energy Blast, with the advantages of "Autofire" and "Armor
Piercing". Note that the ranges spells are being tossed around at
are very long. It is possible that many of these spells have "No
Range Modifier" as well.
Page Number: 179-180
Who: Shiobara Ichirou
Spell Name: Shiobara Ichirou transforms himself fully into an Entity
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou transforms fully into his Entity form. He grows wings, a
tail, a long neck and looks very much like a mutant dragon.
Game Effects: Multiform. Actually, this may not be the case. Ichirou probably
can't return to normal, so this spell is ore of a special effect for
a whole new character. Gigelf states: "That's his true face. So
this is what happen to a man who sells his soul to the Lucifer Folk
in the end...". This seems to infer that Ichirou is now 'stuck' in
his present body.
Page Number: 181-186
Who: Shiobara Ichirou the Entity
Spell Name: Gravity Pulse
Incantations: None
Description: Shiobara Ichirou the Entity opens his jaws and unleashes a massive
energy blast. These blasts devastate several nearby buildings,
cutting them almost in half. This is probably a more powerful
version of Ichirou's mouth-launched blast seen on page 173-174
Game Effects: As stated before, these attacks are either Energy Blasts or a
Ranged Killing Attacks. Unlike Ichirou's previous mouth blast, these
spells take no time to launch.
Page Number: 188
Who: Genvara
Spell Name: Jesso, the Emperor of Blades
Incantations: None
Description: Genvara drives Jesso into Ichirou's back/neck (showing how big
the new Ichirou is).
Game Effects: This a Hand Killing Attack bought through a focus.
Page Number: 188
Who: Shiobara Ichirou the Entity
Spell Name: Gravity Pulse
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou fires off an energy blast at Genvara. Genvara is hit dead
center, but survives (and isn't Stunned), but is wounded.
Game Effects: As stated, this is probably and Energy Blast of Ranged Killing
Attack. Drawing blood and not Stunning your target lends
weight to the RKA idea, as it is possible to get a high BODY score
and a low STUN Multiple, leading to the exact scene seen here. It
also proves that Genvara (and possibly all other sorcerers) are
physically tough.
Page Number: 189
Who: Shutoro Zekku
Spell Name: Bonds of Ice
Incantations: None
Description: Shutoro encases Ichirou in a thick mass of ice.
Game Effects: This is an Entangle. Shutoro states: "That ice won't melt. It
won't break or shatter. You can't escape it." This works quite well
for an Entangle, as the special effect of the magical ice is that it
doesn't melt. It should also be noted that when Ichirou hits the
ground, his wings snap off (but are still encased in ice).
Page Number: 191
Who: Brighton
Spell Name: Gravity Pulse(?)
Incantations: None
Description: Brighton makes a hand gesture and Ichirou's ice enshrouded body is
hit by a massive shockwave/explosion. Part of the ice is fragmented
by this attack.
Game Effects: Physical Energy Blast. Probably "Indirect", as the attack comes
from below Ichirou. Actually, the attack may come from above
and push its target down into the ground.
Page Number: 192
Who: Gigelf Liqueur
Spell Name: Unknown
Incantations: Hear me, 13 planet spirits... your power, the ancient pact that
springs from Gaia's earth is in me. Gigelf Liqueur's command comes
from the sea of my blood...
Description: None, as Gigelf doesn't get to finish this spell.
Game Effects: None, as Gigelf doesn't get to finish this spell. But, see below
for more.
Page Number: 193
Who: Shiobara Ichirou the Entity
Spell Name: Gravity Pulse
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou fires off an energy blast at Brighton. Brighton is hit
and tossed away by the attack.
Game Effects: Brighton is hurled away by an Energy blast. He survives through,
and doesn't even appear mussed in a later panel. Once again, proof
that wizards are hard to hurt (at least, in this volume).
Page Number: 194
Who: Lufa Cheyenne
Spell Name: Unknown (Barrier/Shield)
Incantations: Unknown
Description: Unknown
Game Effects: When Ichirou was hurling about Gravity Pulses on pages 181-186,
some of the debris from the explosions dropped on Kouhou Yamigumo and
Lufa Cheyenne. Lufa erected some sort of shield to defend the pair.
Page Number: 195-196
Who: Gigelf Liqueur
Spell Name: The Door of Heavenly Light
Incantations: The power of 13 stars' spirits is in me... The
Emperor of swords Grospolina's strength is given to me... Gaia's
earth's light, destroy the dark utterly. The time to free it has
come now. Open! The door of heavenly light!
Description: Gigelf uses Grospolina to channel a massive energy blast at
Ichirou's frozen form.
Game Effects: This is a large-scale energy Blast or Ranged Killing Attack.
Ichirou actually survives the spell intact, but then dies a panel or
two later. This is probably the same spell that Gigelf started on
page 192.
Page Number: 196
Who: Shiobara Ichirou the Entity
Spell Name: Gravity Pulse
Incantations: None
Description: Ichirou fires off an energy blast at Gigelf
Game Effects: It would seem that Ichirou's attack is countered by Gigelf's
spell. This is common in anime and manga, where on attack can
overpower and destroy another attack before going on to hit its
target. This type of power stunt combines elements of Missile
Deflection and Dispel into one big attack. It is possible that to
fully simulate this sort of attack, one should link a Dispel to all
their (or some) attacks.
Return to the Silent Möbius Grimore
