Background/History: James "Jim" Hawking is the son of a famous computer hacker known as "The Wizard." Jim himself is pretty much a boy genius, and is an accomplished mechanic and computer operator. He joined Gene sometime before the show starts, forming the Starwind and Hawking Company (We fix everything from engines to relationships!). Virtually nothing is said of his past or how he joined Gene, and the fact he's only 11 doesn't seem to interfere with his ability to drive, crew a starship, or carry a gun.
Jim first appears in Episode 1, Outlaw World, and appears in every episode afterwards.
Personality/Motivation: Jim is Gene's opposite in every way. He is a cautious type, and doesn't like to run headlong into trouble. Instead, he will hang back and do a little research first. He also likes to plan ahead, and argues often with Gene over how they need to take more jobs, even if they are "small" ones. Jim also does his best to try and keep Gene on the straight and narrow, a frustrating job to be sure.
Jim has an interesting relationship with Aisha—it's very much along the lines of a big-sister/little-brother interaction, and Aisha seems to like Jim while at the same time constantly sparring verbally with Gene.
Quotes: "Damn it, I'm supposed to be the brains of this outfit..."
"Some how, being told I make a good team with a guy like this doesn't make me happy."
Powers/Tactics: Jim is a skilled mechanic, electrician, and can even repair cybernetic implants (such as a cyberarm). He's also a capable computer hacker, and often helps the Outlaw Star fight off computer intrusions. His pocket computer has the ability to scan a target and determine if they are human or a cyborg, and if so, where the cyborg's weak spots are. On board the Outlaw Star he tends to run the sensors and assist in navigation duties. He also determines what needs to be repaired, how they should be done, and who should do them.
Appearance: Jim is 11 years-old, stands 4'6" tall and weighs 70 lbs. He has blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He normally wears a red t-shirt, a dark gray jacket, white cargo pants, brown boots, and brown fingerless gloves.
Designer's Notes: Jim's name is an obvious play on Jim Hawkings from Treasure Island, possible mixed with a little Stephen Hawking. His usefulness is hard to express in character points, as he's the "brains" behind the Starwind and Hawking Company, and keeps the crew on an even keel. As a side note, Jim rarely calls Gene "Gene," instead referring to him as "aniki" or "brother."
Jim back the perfect base on which to model any number of "boy genius" characters. Simply add a few more Sciences, the Inventor Skill, and maybe the Power Skill to let Jim create and modify technological items quickly.
