Ecology: Hunters, also known as “Mini Striders,” are very fast and agile bio-mechanical creations of the Combine. As with all other Combine synths, they seem to be based on some form of alien life form (and perhaps come from the same world as the Strider.) Hunters have been modified cybernetically, and incorporate various weapons systems in their bodies. Unlike Gunships and Striders they behave more like animals than machines and are often sent out on independent scouting and tracking missions.
Personality/Motivation: As they are under the control of the Combine, Hunters don’t seem to have any sort of free will. However, they do seem to be more intelligent than Striders, and react faster to changing battlefield situations.
Powers/Tactics: Hunters are similar in many respects to Striders, having the same general physiology (a main body supported by three limbs), an armored exoskeleton and/or carapace, and internal weaponry. The primary offensive weapon of a Hunter is a pair of vertically-aligned flechette launchers mounted on the front of the Hunter’s ‘face.’ These launchers fire large, fast-moving darts that explode on impact. As with the Strider, the Hunter will ‘walk’ fire into a target and will also aim ahead of a moving target and try for deflection shots. Hunters also have short bladed arms under their flechette launchers and long talons on each of their three legs. They’ll use these weapons to quickly eviscerate anyone foolish enough to remain in melee range with them.
As Hunters normally operate in small groups, they tend to use pack tactics when pursuing and attacking a foe. Not only will Hunters provide each other with covering fire, but select individuals will try and flank their targets, while others make quick forward advances. If needed, a Hunter will do a Move-Through on doors, walls, and stationary foes, possibly sacrificing itself to allow its companions access.
Appearance: Hunters have roughly oval bodies perched atop three well-muscled legs. They are covered in a shiny metallic blue-green exoskeleton with clusters of what look to be compound eyes on either side of the body. The flechette launchers are on the front of the body, with small bladed limbs hanging from the underside. On the back of the body are two small orifices used for breathing, vocalizations, or both.
Designer's Notes: The Hunter is one of the alien creatures found in Valve Software’s Half Life 2 series of games. Much of the information here was taken from direct game play, as well as the Combine OverWiki, found at http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page. The stats given here are a mix of conjecture, game play descriptions, and an attempt to present in-game concepts in a manner consistent with the HERO System.
